MK5 GTI - DMF Failure ?

Post by Jacques1397 »

Hi Guys

New problem came up with the MK5. No spiritted driving , had a cruise to town then all of a sudden heard a ricking noise in 4th and 6th gear. Stopped , put car in neutral , leave the clutch ticking noise appears , depress the clutch ticking noise goes away. Seems like DMF is on its way out.

Any ideas on how to check it ? Replacement cost approx ?

Everytime I expect some returns or extra money this happens

Also must I go DMF or SMF ? Got K04 in this MK5

Thanks

Does it make a metal clacking sound when turning off?

You can remove the starter, make a mark across the masses and then move the one mass relative to the other. If the distance is more than a few cms, you're in for a new DMF. Remember if you do replace only the DMF, it must be matched to the brand of clutch.

Thanks Sir will check it out for sure. Thinking about it now it started a while back but not as noticable as now. Does make a little clucnking noise when turning off , and when depressing clutch there is no noise. But when releasing clutch the noise comes back (when idling in nuetral) and then depressinf clutch again can hear the noise slowing down - as if its something metal spinning and then slowly stopping again.

Very noticable in 4th and 6th gear but dont hear it in the rest Image

Will remove the started and check it out. New DMF price ? Probably expensive again Image

You buy a whole clutch kit that includes the dmf and the correct plates. Probably around 12k

Damn not again. Clutch still seems fine though so will only go for the DMF. Dont have 12k now again. Still recovering from the 17k last time around

You say again and 17k. Have you replaced a clutch recently or was that for something else?

Was for the damage related to the follower. Had to do a brand new Cam , Follower , Autotech upgraded pin , Petrol pump , sensor etc.

Clutch was done according to the previouse owner on around 100k. Now on 172k

Clutch may have been done but if the DMF is going I doubt it was replaced when the clutch was done in that case.

I S*** myself when I Learnt that a DMF can separate , with it's weigh , can only imagine the damage it could do at high RPM's. :fear:

Maybe best to look at a more robust option? Tuned K04 torque on stock clutch/DMF is a killer.
