Help - Scirocco 2.0 TSi

Post by TDi Tuned »

Hi Guys

A friend of mine has a 2009 Roc 2.0 TSi. Car has low mileage for its model (70k odd) and is serviced according to schedule every year by the agents.
He recently started noticing that the car is down on power, smoking a little and not sounding as loud as it once was (has downpipe). He also commented that the car is much heavier on fuel. He drives 95% extra urban and is used to the 12l/100km mark and is now averaging 15 - 16 l/100km.

Any ideas where we can start looking for a solution? Done diagnostics many times, no errors identified.
Also what are the symptoms of faulty DV and will this give an error when doing diagnostics?

Thanks in advance

12l/100 is heavy to begin with for that motor and driving extra urban. It could be many things. He would have to do some vcds logs of boost and fuel etc. Perhaps a compression test as well.

Does the car have software?

Who did the diagnostics?
Common on the early Tsi motors were chain tensioner failures, caused issues with timing as the chain will slip. At the very worst it can destroy the Pistons completely.
I suggest getting the car to someone who knows what they are doing

Yes car has SW, was perfect for many years after doing SW, intake and DP. Nothing has changed though, i.e. no additional performance tweaks. Car just does not feel the way it used to.

Are those not CDL engines in the ROC. Have a look at the registration disc and tell us what the engine code is.

this!
also make sure that what they actually serviced they did in fact do.
check for clogged filters and plugs
you say the car has software so let the tuner log the car to see if there are any issues

Thanks guys, engine code starts with CAW.

The car has been like this for months now and due to work commitments never ended up getting checked properly.

Would chain tensioner issues not have gotten worse over time and had more serious effects by now?

Just an update:

Compression test done, car showed between 12.2 and 12.4 dry test and 12.4 and 12.6 on wet test across each cylinder.
We were told that the compression is spot on, can anyone advise?

Another thing to point out, original (stock) intake was put back on car and it did make a positive difference although
not perfect.

Thanks again

The air filter probably dirty/blocked up?

Well if the stock intake made a difference, its quite clear that the aftermarket filter is dirty. I agree with Uncle Nanda, check all filters and plugs..

Maybe even run some logs, fuel trims might give u a hint if the car is running rich. And with a blocked up air filter, the maf could also be dirty.

Thanks Guys.

As mentioned previously the after market intake was taken off and the stock intake put back, stock intake has a brand new filter in it.
Did some logs to measure the flow with stock intake, max reading from a 2nd and 3rd gear pull was 177gs/m. Car feels better with stock intake but still feel it lacking power. As mentioned before compression test was also done, was told it was all good.

Did the following over the weekend:
1. Visual inspection of plugs, looks like used plugs should look, nothing out of the ordinary - getting no symptoms of faulty plugs or coil packs so refitted.
2. Removed DV and inspected, has older type rubber diaphram, no tears observed, refitted. Noticed oil on the DV, is this normal? Not excessive but there was oil. Oil also found in the wiring/sensor to the DV.
3. Diagnostics - cleared all DTC's, (lots of old DTC's from changing battery and blown light bulbs etc) took car for a drive and there was a intake manifold flap error coming up. Did not save the report but will post the exact fault soon.

Thanks for all the input, will update as we go along.
