Polo GTI 1.8T Smokes On Idle When Cold

Post by Herschel »

Hi guys

My wife's Polo GTI smokes when the car idles & when it's cold. It's white smoke,so it's oil & you can smell it.As you the drive the car the smoking stops.
Could it be turbo seals that's messed up?

look like someone deleted my comments here hmmmm

like i said before Larry also had this issue and it turned out to be the turbo seals also if something has cracked on the manifold
as these cars are prone for that

As far as I know white smoke is water or coolant. Blueish smoke is oil usually.

Won't be valve stem seals, otherwise it would smoke everytime a person lifts your foot from the petrol.
Thanks for all the comments

It sits on the top right hand corner of the valve cover on the turbo inlet pipe , it looks like a hockey puck.

Sorry for the hijack, but I seem to have the same issue.
When the car is cold, there is no smoke, but as soon as I'm standing too long in traffic, it starts smoking quite a bit.

Not sure where to start? PVC, Turbo, Cooler?

Check PCV, mine did the same and went away when I changed my PCV (it also had a farkoff big hole in it).

I don't have any smoke now besides a blue puff on coldstart startup, which is turbo.

Good day gents,

I also have a similar issue on my A3 1.8T 8L. Car only smokes on idle when warm, eg. sitting at a robo, then a puff of smoke when taking off, but under normal driving, no smoke and no problems with boost either. I did notice a split in the hose from the Hockey puck, then another hose also split. I think it could be related to the PCV system but I had changed the PCV last year when I first started observing this smoking. Could it be the PRV/Hockey puck valve that is causing this smoking issue ? If so, how can you test this valve ? Also, if it is PCV related, is fitting a catch can / PCV delete the solution to the problem ? Are there kits available for the 1.8T's ?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
