My girlfriend is dripping power steering fluid.
I refilled it 6 weeks ago and now it's completely empty.
Any ideas what I need to fix.
Thanks a lot. ..

Re: golf 4 leaking power steering fluid
Check the pipe for the power steering
Mine also had a leak and we changed the pipe if I remember correctly

Re: golf 4 leaking power steering fluid
First step is to check where it is leaking from, if its leaking from the pump reservoir
then it could be a pipe thats loose if so you lucky just tighten. However the
chances are that a pipe suddenly got loose is unlikely.
Secondly and more likely its leaking from the rack end boot (plastic dust
cover that fits over the rack end), if so then the steering rack is shot.
If this is the case, avoid driving the car, if the fluid drains out you can
strain and damage the power steering pump which is costly.
It is unlikely that the steering rack is leaking anywhere else but from the boot,
theres only one metal inflow line.
Your options on the steering rack is:
Brand new - R 15k
Recondition your steering rack - R 5k (only done a power steering specialists)
Second hand steering rack from a scrap yard - R 3k - R 6k (depending on condition)
If the pump breaks then brand new = R 10k
You cannot recondition the pump as it is an electric driven pump.
Second hand pumps can be found at scrapyards.
Hope this helps,

Thanks a lot. ..
The leak usually occurs on the pipe in the front, behind the radiator (where the sensor plugs in) - both my Mk4's had this issue. (worth a look)
