I don't understand how this was not deemed a factory fault. I want to see what goodwill they offer me before I make a decision.

Not sure if my previous post upload.

I've had some success with my persistence. I was quoted R49000 for engine repairs.
VWSA and Alpine VW are now contributing R32000 some change and I will contribute R16473.73 towards the total sum of R49000.

Just to add here. Two guys I know had this happen on their A4 and A5 2.0T's and both times Audi just changes the chain and tensioner and the cars were 100% fine, last one in question was two weeks ago at Audi Centre Cape Town. Not sure if this means that Audi has some sort of system that doesn't damage engine components, or VW just replaces engines when in fact they don't need to be replaced.

Either way, weird...

When Audi rebuilt my engine I got a new chain and revised tensioner, along with my new pistons and conrods, so I should be good to go. :)

Sold my GTi on, but it's with someone I know and he has yet to replace the revised version that was fitted when my OEM one went at ~100k km. The car's mileage is now 190k+ and still going strong. However, I've recommended that he replace it soon, just in case.

Think easiest way is to contact a dealer with your VIN and ask which revision

This is certainly a common problem but when you query this with the dealer, they never seem to know about it.

How does one get this done if not at the dealer? Any VAG specialists in or around Midrand that can do this?

Do the software companies like ETuners and the like offer this?

I think Etuners assist, contact them.

Agreed. I queried with the dealer but they unaware. They can only tell which tensioner is on the car via visual inspection. They cant pickup on the system.

It's been discussed at lengths. The dealership/VW aren't going to replace this for you, so replace it out of your own pocket.

Gents, has anyone had the timing chain job done on their car recently? If so please give me an idea of the parts and labour costs. And if possible a suggestion of where I can have this done in Durban.
Thank you

I had this done today at ETuners in Midrand. Glad this is sorted. Shaheen's service was excellent. Roughly R6.5k parts and labour is what it should cost.

Hi all,

I took my car in to ETuners on Tuesday (2017-10-03) to have my Tensioner, chain, and guides replaced to the latest revision as preventative maintenance on my Mk6 GTi.

I'm really content with the workmanship and service received from Shaheen and the team! As you all know VW charges an arm, leg and kidney to have the tensioner replaced. Granted not all components are changed as per VW's quote such as the cover which may get bent when removing, however this just shows how experienced and careful ETuners is when carrying out this task as unnecessary items are not replaced, only what really needs to be replaced.

In summary not think twice about take your car through to Shaheen and the team to have your tensioner replaced. I highly recommend them.

Cheers
