Golf TSI 118kW Engine Problems??
Hi guys,
So I am in the market to replace my Golf 4. I have been looking around and am leaning towards to the Golf 6 TSI. I have being looking at the TSI Comfortline and the TSI Highline but looking at the interweb I see that there are numerous reports of engine failures. I would like to know if this has been experienced locally and is there something that makes that version a bad choice.
I want to purchase something from 2010 to later and plan on having this vehicle for another 7 years at least and want something that will not be burn a hole in the pocket with maintenance and running costs. Would the 90kW version be a safer buy?
I would also want something something with some creature comforts like sunroof and heated leather seats since my Golf 4 2.0 Highline had these. I also want bluetooth, steering wheel mounted controls and cruise control.
Thanks in advance

Re: Golf TSI 118kW Engine Problems??
Hi
I own a 2010 G6 TSI comfortline (90kw) from brand new. I have Revo Stage 1 software, DP and intake. Mileage is 62000 km. I've had a problem with the gearbox, where 1st and 2nd gears weren't selecting. VW sorted it out as it was under warranty cost (R10 000). They couldn't find the cause and suspected it was a factory fault. Then recently I had the timing chain changed as well as cam follower. On start up car sounded like a tractor. Again warranty claim, and they couldn't tell me what the cause was. I'm a careful owner, who takes care of my cars, I don't drive them hard or neglect them, so not sure what the cause was. A tech at VW told me that initially they had problems with TSI engines (90kw) with pistons being melted and broken something like that. According to him it was a software problem, and had updated software on these vehicles that came in. Im not sure how serious this problem was but he did mention that they replaced a few engines. My advice is purchase a 2010 model upwards, don't mod tooo much, even if you do go with someone like Revo or a reputable co. Make sure you have extended warranty just in case. But so far im very with my car. Best value for money, economical, great features, extremely comfortable and drives like NEW. Hope this helps

Re: Golf TSI 118kW Engine Problems??
We do at least 2 engines a week on these I would rather go g5, g6 is a piece of ****! Just my 2c. So far personally ive seen over 20 g6/roc models need new engines in the past 2 years, be it gti or tsi and g5 can be counted on 1 hand in 4 years.

Re: Golf TSI 118kW Engine Problems??
That's due to the plastic cam chain tensioner, there is a TSB out for a new chain and a TSB for a metal cam chain tensioner. The tsi motors are epic it's just cam chain VS cam belt issues that need to be sorted.dubdude wrote:We do at least 2 engines a week on these I would rather go g5, g6 is a piece of s**t! Just my 2c. Re: Golf TSI 118kW Engine Problems??
Thanks for all the responses guys. I dont intend modding the engine in any way. The only thing I may do is a set of wheels and maybe a slightly lower suspension. This is going to be the daily drive for the wife so no need for lots of power/torque. Just want something reliable and that is not going to cost me a bundle in maintenance costs.
I was initially looking at the mk5 gti's but there is no telling what you are buying hence me leaning more towards the golf 6 thinking that it is a newer vehicle and will have less mileage and a lower cost of ownership.

Re: Golf TSI 118kW Engine Problems??
Hi,
I eventually purchased a TSI Comfortline at a good price, this is the turbo only, 90kW version. I must admit coming from a Mk4, 2.0 Highline, the TSI engine is a little gem imho, lovely low down torque that suits my driving style ideally. Reliability has not been a problem so far, just an intermittent noisy clutch.
I saw a few Highlines but the price that I got the Comfortline for was too good to pass up and it had leather seats (heated fronts) and front and rear pdc so decided to go for that.
Either are good and there seem to be a few with high mileage out there so I doubt that reliability is a big issue, good luck

Re: Golf TSI 118kW Engine Problems??
Sorry late reply. I have the 2009 90kw version. Sitting on 81k. Engine still going strong. Turbo was replaced under maintenance plan about 5000km ago. The actuator was sticky.

Good day all I have a 2010 GOLF VI TSI Trendliner, the rev count doesn't reach 3 on the speedo meter and some how tends to loose power if I keep reving it up, it only reaches a speed of 140 while driving wit a fully pressed accelerator. what might be wrong?
Please help.

Re: Golf TSI 118kW Engine Problems??
you need somebody to run a diagnosis and see what it shows in the line of faults. Can be 100;s of things. Anything from failed airflow meter to leaking boost pipe to faulty boost controller to broken dump valve etc etc.
Of course like every newbie you have neglected to give ANY kind of indication of where you are based on top of the fact that you revived an old post instead of just posting a new one.
