hopefully you did not bend any valves, I normally get cam belts from Goldwagon. Set timing, fit new belt and turn motor over by hand if she turn over easy then try to start only. If she starts with a miss then you a compression tester to check in which cylinder the valves bent. Get a new tensioner as well maybe that seized up and caused the belt to snap

Gates Powergrip. It's the OEM part for 8v VW engines, if memory serves.

Powergrip or Dayco otherwise oem, replace the tensioner if it have a squeek. Don't overtighten the tensioner. If you start and it runs uneven then you give it a couple of revs to get oil in the lifters again then it should run fine.

My CTi's tentioner came loose a few weeks ago(previous owner used a heli coil to keep the stud in). Car died. I wasn't so lucky. All 8 valves were bent.

In your case you will bend all 8 because the belt still on and force the valve onto the piston, if a belt snap its very seldom bend valves, if it does it will only be 2 valve at the most, but also its only 8v motors, 16v and 20v you ****

What would happen to my Polo if the belt snapped? Stuff motor?
Reason I ask is because I have just got the car and not sure when it was changed.
Is it expensive to get a new one on there as well?

What UDC wrote still applies:

If the engine starts without a miss, consider yourself lucky and move on.
