Caddy radiator fans not working

Post by Armand »

Hi, drove today and noticed the aircon not working at idle, checked and found both fans not to come in, plugged in the vcds in and it found three faults, can somebody please help with where I must start fault finding please.
Fault codes are:
18359- Radiator fan restricted P1951-007- short to ground-intermittent
18358-Radiator fan restricted P1950-007- short to ground-intermittent
And then there is a third fault code aswell that I dont understand:
17831-Secondary air injection system Bank 1 insuficient flow P1423-006 Short to plus-intermittent

Hi there.

I had a similar issue, albeit without any error codes...

Turned out that the brushes on my smaller fan were stuck in their little housings due to grit getting stuck in there over the years. Cleaned it out and the fan is working like a bomb again.

Given that you've got error codes it may be a wiring issue that you'll have to look at, or check your fan relay (easiest way of doing this is just to swop it around with a known working one and see if that fixes the problem).

Sounds like either your fan(s) are busted, or the controller may be stuffed (I think the controller sits on the fan on your car).

If it was the controller it will say controller so it is the physical fans that are stuffed.
The secondary air injection uses a pump to supply extra air to heat up the catalytic converter on startup to get it to working temp faster.. Not an issue much in south africa. It does not get that cold here so they come up to temp quite quick anyway.

Thanks, I am going to take out the fans and check the bushes, can this be the same problem with the main fan?

They are at the end of their usefull life. So inless you find some replacement bushes it will happen soon again as the little spring does not have enough oomph to keep pushing it as the brush is now too short.
You can take a sample and go to auto electricians or places that stock replacement parts for electrical tools and see if you can find an equivalent to make work there.

The brushes are still about 3/4 of the casing that keep them in place, I was suprised as the caddy is standing on 180000km and thought they would be worn out more

maybe the fans are dead. you need to do some fault finding to see if they run.
