My race car uses essentially ABF.
Dad's race car uses a Neo-VVL (sr20ve).
Both motors use same (as in identical) ITBs, similar cams, same ECU, same tuner.
Guess which one makes more HP (and is more reliable)...

SR20VE is probably my favorite engine on the planet ito stock performance.
But by the time you get any of that going in a Volkswagen, you're on a fools errand if you think you've "gained".

some of the fastest Mk1s in the world have one thing in common.. ABF 16V! you just need to know what you're doing to get to that statusBlueBlob wrote:Don't get me wrong.ALRoN73 wrote:Inb4 ABFBlueBlob wrote:So my question is more "why?".

If I'm going to go through that much effort, it will be a 400hp K24 Honda or something.ALRoN73 wrote:Still going to do it someday
Definitely not something like an SR20 where simply throwing R5k at an ABF will nett more HP.

Yeah you might think so, but take it from an old-timer; at some point, you are chasing (or want) HP numbers anyway.ALRoN73 wrote:Nah it's just something i have wanted to do for some time, not chasing hp numbers just want a vvl citi

Re: 8v block with neo vvl head
I just hoped that vw would build a 2l 16v na that will just drop in a mk1 can kill these guys in stock. The only way I see it, is that you have to turbo a vw .Like the 2l 8v and 2l 16v to keep up/ beat.

Another thing to keep in mind is that all the newer high revving motors tend to be square or oversquare configurations to reduce piston speed, the older 2.0 VW motors are all undersquared, so more torque but not really high revving by nature, unless you built a custom bottom end with shorter stroke and big pistons in which case you have to sacrifice capacity.
Current rides:
