97 Polo Fuel leak under back seat

Post by JunaVivo »

Hi All

Need some help here please.

This morning just as I started her up, I noticed some petrol smell for the first time. I Initially ignored it thinking it was just overfueling but then then the smell became stronger. Instinct said look under the vehicle, and then I saw petrol dripping from the fuel tank :bang:

Switched car off, lifted the back seat, opened the 3 screws holding the black seal and saw petrol around that area.

I took a pic, but not sure how to upload.. Anyways, I drove to work this morning, and it appears to have not leaked again, however this is troubling me.

What could be the most likely cause ?

All help is appreciated!

Thanks

Overfilling + summer heat + old, hard/partly-perished seal = fuel expanding & leaking into interior.

For anyone else that may have the same issue. The original clamps on the fuel pipes tend to loose their grip over time, thats where the fuel was leaking from. I replaced the three clamps and issue is now sorted.
