caddy airfilter stud to carb
hi guys
my centre stud came loose again the side that goes into the carb, luckily it never went through the carb like before and shot a valve open and damage, now when I check the thred on the stud is completely gone but don't know if there is thred in the carb housing anymore
I urgently need help on fixing this
Thanks

Re: caddy airfilter stud to carb
Helicoil.
Alternatively, you can epoxy another threaded bar in there with the same size threads, or you can drill the hole bigger and fit one of those threaded metal inserts.
I'd remove the carb for all alternative listed if I was you...

Re: caddy airfilter stud to carb
Much safer to remove the carb yes. Also remember to use thread locker on whatever insert you use and on the stud. If you ise a locking nut above the cap on the stud it can never fall into the motor even if it unscrews..

Re: caddy airfilter stud to carb
yes luckily I had a lock nut on there although that other steel thick part that goes over the stud was lying on top of the carb where it spray, previously this happened and it cost me a head overhaul due to bend valve

Re: caddy airfilter stud to carb
I am just going to buy a re-tap with the same size stud that goes into the carb and not the helicoil method
so basically you just clean the old thread out of the carb and fit the new stud, do you still then put tread locker when fitting the new stud

I don't know how the helicoil method works with drilling a hole in the old one

Re: caddy airfilter stud to carb
I used pratley steel on the 1300 - for 2 years till I took the motor out it was perfect.
Easier way than tapping etc.

Re: caddy airfilter stud to carb
i boughtyesterday a tap and die set for now, it wasn't that expensive
so I'll be just re-tapping the tread this weekend also have a new stud with lockbolt that I bought at GW
The locktite thread locker was quite expensive, paid like something R117 at midas and it's a small red bottle
I hope it will do the trick

Re: caddy airfilter stud to carb
so I retap the new threat with a bigger size stud M7 and used theadlocker, all worked like a charm and thanks for all the help guys
now I have another question to you'll guys, I don't know for what reason but the car got me stuck on the road yesterday, don't know if its because of the carb took out while I was doing the new stut thing, but anyways the car was like surging for fuel
I ended up took the carb of and buy a new goldwagen carb as a replacement one for now, vw is charging R5900 for new one
so everything is up and running now, it works just fine
I just want to find out 2 things from you'll is that the carb got 3 vacuum inlets at the back so I connected the dizzy one left one if you look at the carb from the back point of view and not the front
then at the front there is one mounted to the carb directly it self and then you have 2 vacuum things also mounted to the carb so I connect the one vacuum to that inlet one to the carb, it also has a extra vacuum mounted at the front of the carb which is connected to the throttle shaft of which the original keihin carb does not have, it also has a vacuum inlet to that one but I left it unplugged
my choke is also connected but it does not work when I started this morning so the engine were idling very low until it warmed up, this also needs to get sorted out

Re: caddy airfilter stud to carb
Useless without pictures. The carb as it came should have had the necessary things connected except the dissy vacuum which you said you did connect.

Re: caddy airfilter stud to carb
yes I understand its useless without pics, I put some pics then, the only problem I am having at the moment is my choke isn't working and there is a extra vacuum plumber at the bottom left front of the carb that is connected to the throttle shaft at the left which also has a vacuum nipple which I left unplugged, due to the original vw carb didn't have that vacuum plumber attaced so I don't know what is the purpose of that one
that's about it all the other vacuum nipples at the back has been blocked of, the middle one and the one facing the driver side, the only one that I use is the one facing the passenger side and that the dizzy one connected
can you please guide me on how to upload pics?
