Help Needed Jetta3

Post by LYFGP0 »

Hi guys :hi:

So my 96' Jetta 3 1.6i CSL, 330000km's has been acting up since Sunday.

I felt the car has like no power between 1000rpm and 2500rpm especially. I drove the car to work Monday morning as I had to work late Monday(there was no way I would use public transport at night). So... I could hardly get my car out of our basement, I practically had to burn the clutch to get it up the steep basement exit. Anyway, I drove home (40kms) and as I got closer to my house I could feel the car was starting to loose power more and more. I got to the last robot before my house and the car struggled to idle and eventually died.

What could be wrong?
There is spark, timing is fine according to mechanic, fuel pressure is fine. :(

TIA

If only I/you didn't live so far away, my car would have been in your workshop already. :(

Unplugged the manifold pressure sender(I hope that's what we unplugged) and made no difference. Unplugged the temp switch, the car manged to start once or twice but then dies again after a few seconds. What's TPS :oops: ?

Throttle position sender. Unplugging something is not a diagnostic method i rate as any good. All you have managed to do is record more errors in the management. You need to use the tool and see if they report reasonably correct values.

Noted, thank you Panic.
I'll hopefully have the car towed to a workshop this weekend.

Will provide feedback as soon as possible.

Fuel starvation? Suspect that your fuel pump is giving up.

Will have it checked out too, thanks.

So I got the car scanned with VCDS and the only errors/faults that showed up were RPM sensor, Temperature Sensor and Manifold sensor. I guess those errors came up because of having them unplugged as Panic suggests.

Ok so diagnosis don't stop at looking for error codes. Go to the reading blocks and check
does the temperature seem correct(agree to ambient if it has not been started)
does the TPS reading change when you move the throttle Small to big as you put your foot down and move linearly)
does the manifold pressure look right (0.83 at altitude with engine on but not running)

What language is this Mr Panic? :lol:

I think the easiest solution now is to have the car towed to a workshop so it can be sorted once and for all.

I however bought a new temp switch, just so it is ma replaced.

Okay, so the car has been fixed finally :hi: :hurray:

Turns out the crank gear (IIRC) stripped a tooth. Mechanic confirmed the car is 100% now :hurray: :hurray: :hurray:

While it was there, I had him do the following too:
* Camblet
* Tensioners
* Service (New oil, spark plugs etc)
* Waterpump (Was leaking)
