mk2 gti Engine cuts out at a certain temperature.

Hi All,

Ive recently gotten my mk2 to start after replacing a faulty warm up regulator.

What happened last night was that after idling the car for about 5mins after replacing the WUR, the engine cut out.

I've noticed that the car ran really hot and saw that all the water ran out at the water pump side and the fan did not kick in.

After waiting for it to cool down, the car starts and idles again.

Its obvious that I should sort out the water leak first but my question is is this the reason why the car cuts out at high temp?

It's almost impossible to guess with the amount of data you supplied.
Could be fuelling , could be anything. Did you check at that point if there was spark.
Does the fuel pump run, did you pull an injector and see if it is spraying at all? Any kind of diagnostic at all? Except waiting for it to cool.

Hi Panic,

I tested both fuel pumps and they are working.

I bridged the fuel pump relay, disconnected the coil, pulled all 4 injectors out and manually moved the plunger to look at the spray pattern and it was fine.

The car wouldn't idle at all at first until I replaced the WUR.

Once it idled, I discovered a waterleak which I am trying to fix. Once the water is flowing properly, I am hoping that she will stay idling and not cut out.

So next time when it is hot try manually very very gently lifting the flap and see if it stays running. But it is probably an idle mixture adjustment incorrect

Hi Stephan,

Just an update.

I managed to fix the water leak and started her up.

Idling shot straight up to 2500 rpm( smooth idle) upon start up and I then turned in the idling screw so that she can idle around 1000rpm.

After turning in the idling screw, there is a bit of sputter( sounds like it wants to die).

Ive also now noticed that the oil light is flashing. The mechanic said that he put in new sensors( not sure why because there was nothing wrong with the old ones)

The car idled for 10mins like that until I switched it off.

The machy really caught on k@k with my car.

I will check for air leaks tonight as well as check whether the manifold is tightened properly.

Hi ,

So I removed the thermostat this afternoon and the fan started kicking in when the temp gauge was 3/4. The oil temp at that point was 96 deg.

I've also noticed that the flashing oil light goes away once the revs go above 2500 rpm.

The engine still seems to cut out when hot.

it's too lean on idle. google how to set the idle mixture richer. You need a long 3 mm allen key to be able to do it.

Ok thanks. Do I have to disconnect the -ve wire at the coil when turn the C/O screw clockwise?

I did just that and she doesn't switch off anymore.

She is still running hot though. Temp gauge at 3/4(fan does come on) and oil temp around 96-98 at max.

A bit of pinging when I accelerate and the oil light still flashes below 2000rpm.

The oil in the car does look very thin though...

Thanks for your help thus far man. You are truly a legend.

Now to sort out my " Running too hot issue "

Maybe it is not running hot and that the gauge or sender is faulty. The oil temp does not sound high and if the fan come on and goes off it means it is cooling to it's values.

Hi 38, please can you post a pic of where about the screw is to adjust the idle and the air/fuel.

I have a G2 gti and the water temp guage also goes just pass the half mark. The fan switches on and off and it doesn't over heat(even in traffic) but it just makes me nervous as I am used to it never passing the halfway mark. I did rear on a few forums that the 16v's do run a bit hotter and it was normal for the gauge to pass halfway on a hot day. Not sure how true this is though.

what exactly does it matter where the gauge sits. As long as the temp stays constant, fans run and go off then just gets used to where it sits as that is the norm.

I replaced the blue low pressure sensor and the temp sender.

The oil light doesn't flash anymore.

I also flushed the radiator and it seems to run ok now( just how I remember it running before).
