VW GOLF 4 2.0 Ignition problem-2017 problem :(

Post by golfer23 »

hi gents....

so sunday passed my car started idling funny. was away for weekend so managed to check it on tuesday.
vagcom says "misfire on cylinder #4" i clear the code and code goes away, but still idles.
I thought ok, spark plug or lead. so i start checking on ignition coil, turns out to be the coil not sparking at the one point.
Get a new ignition coil from goldwagen, fit, same problem.
So, need help asap to what the problem is that it is not sparking at the one point.
thanks.

what i did was i removed an individual lead off the ignition coil, and then got someone to start car. and each time there would be a spark out of the coil which could be seen except and the one point.

Image

pic of the part i changed. and if we take the top left as no.1, below it staying left no.2 and then top right no.3 and bottom right no.4, then the NO SPARK is happening at no.3.

This coil fires in pairs so if there is a fault in the coil two outputs will be dead, even if the trigger is missing the same will happen. You sure it's the coil and not on the lead/sparkplug?

Hi torker i always said the same until i found one of a friend that did exactly this. One of a pair died. But in his case changing the coil solved it and I could see a fairly large crack across the plastic body of the coil and I happened to have washed the engine which I suspect cuased a short .
So how that will happen after a change of coil I am not sure at all unless you have rhe worst possible luck.
So physically checkng for spark shows you that one is not firing not a pair still?
The missfire could be caused by an injector as well ...

Could be the lead itself, it's common for the leads on Polo 1.4/1.6's to just randomly die.

i took a lead off the coil, did it one by one, and started the car. thus i saw a spark shoot out of the coil at 3 of the 4 points.

Re: VW GOLF 4 2.0 Ignition problem - FIXED

Post by golfer23 »

my buddy came to help me on saturday. we tackled the sparks and the leads.
the spark plug heads were all black and dirty, was terrible.
the leads were all brittle, the one broke as we were taking it off the plug, was seated in with dirt. was really bad.
now just the oil change.
did the fuel filter myself....haha what a sight!
first time for everything, now i actually want to get all the parts to do all the DIY service i can, was good and relaxing i must say.
have a top week gents!

na, i just pulled the lead off the ignition coil to check the coil was sparking, i was too scared to swap the leads to different points on the coil.

those leads were brittle, looked like someone put glue on them to fix them or something.

quick question. I need to do gaskets. so intake and head gasket? is that correct? APK engine. what would the cost of the gaskets be? the intake gasket seems very easy to do. just gasket and sealer?

hasnt been done in a while, and looks like oil leaking from them.

there was a bit of oil in the intake.

Oil in the intake is pretty normal on a VW (Golf) motor and is caused by piston rings (breathing), not gaskets.

i swapped coil packs, new to old, old to new. pressed down on plugs/wires. fark, i dont know.

just remembered it happened last week monday. 6th feb. i was driving in salt river, noticed rough idle, driving home and then it just came right, no issues. and then was all good till yesterday.

no 4 is the cylinder closest to the gearbox. maybe time to change plugs again seeing that was the previous failure.

so changed all the spark plugs, no. 4 was black, dirty. the others were still sort of okay, dirty but not black like the no.4. why is that?

Was black and dry or black and oily or black and crusty.
Either way if it was mine I would have taken the injectors out and had them cleaned and tested.
It was wet or oily you can have either a valve stem seal issue or a piston/ring issue.
