Polo Vivo Timing Chain Replacement

Post by GOLF GT »

Gents, I need some advice.

My polo is currently on 140000km, I have read on some timing chain failures and have a few questions.

What is recommended mileage to have the chain replaced ?
What other component do I replace when doing the chain ?
Goldwagen parts or OEM ?
Anyone that has done theirs, and is able to recommend someone in JHB to replace mine ? I think the dealership will be crazy expensive.

Regards,

Shouldn't this be treated the same as a cambelt replacement on other cars (even though it 'should' last longer)?

you will need the tool to lock the cams in place as there are no marks on the pulleys etc
we bought the tool from diesel electric, King Tony for about R1300.00 IIRC

Hi guys. When must a vw vivo timing chain be replaced. And can anyone tell me what warning light has popped up by the service bar. It says 1200km to service, followed by an 18 and then a green clock which shows 10 to 2 means. Any help will be appreciated

I don't think there's a quoted replacement period for the chain other than when it gets noisy.... could just replace it at 180-200k km as a precautionary measure.

"18" refers to 18 days remaining of the 1 yr period since the last service....... a car service interval is dicated by either mileage travelled eg every 15k km or should run to a max of 1 yr from the previous service....whichever comes first. Clock is just an indicator of time

Like it has been said.
service intervals display as insp or oil. oil is set on 15000km or 365days , insp is set to 30000km or 720 days. Your cluster I just informing you that service time is close but check you book too as sometimes the service reminders have been set wrong.

Timing chain is supposed to be maintenance free. There is no specific time to replace it but if you really want to start looking at doing it from about 150000km.

I suggest you do it, our company Vivo had FSH with agents, tensioner gave up at 190000km, ended up with 8 bent valves etc.
change water pump whilst you there as well

My vivo is 239500 km and I've never changed the timing chain,I was told at vw to change it at 250000 or 300000 or when its making ruddle noise,I also service the car every 9000 km,performance wise the car is perfect
