Audi S4
Hi All.
Hi all,
I was wondering.
Everyone one the forum buys audi S3’s or A4 1.8t’s or TDI’s?
Is there something wrong with the Audi S4 4.2 V8’s??
I was looking around on the net and looking at Autotrader you can get the 2004 to 2005 year model Audi S4 4.2 for around 120k to 130k with km ranging from 120k to 200k?
Is it not so reliable motor or what??
Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.
My friend has one and is very happy with it and it is fast and the V8 sound = awesomeness

No that's why everyone buys the 1.8's etcDJLSchoemm wrote:Ok that can be an issue but I is there like macanical issues and stuff like that??
Also at altitude they slower then said turbo cars so people pass them by.
Mechanically i don't think the older S4 motor has any major problems

Don't they suffer with excessive carbon build up, or was that only the RS4?

is it not the same motor as the RS4 with the carbon buildup on the valves in less than 25k?PoLonY wrote:No that's why everyone buys the 1.8's etcDJLSchoemm wrote:Ok that can be an issue but I is there like macanical issues and stuff like that??

We on the same wavelength dude.
I thought so as well. At one stage I was looking at buying an RS4, but the petrol budget and carbon build up turned me off completely. I mean look at these:

Re: Audi S4
They are epic cars with very limited common mechanical issues. After drivetrain losses and altitude losses they are close to the same power as most of the 2.0T's etc at the wheels. Fuel is an issue obviously but if it will not be a daily drive then its a decent buy

Re: Audi S4
Is the OP referring to the B6 S4? Besides the normal stuff like water pumps, coilpacks, window regulators, MAF's etc. they generally pretty good mechanically. There were some issues with pistons/cylinders and excessive wear which resulted in a complete block change as the blocks are aluminium and cannot be rehoned/rebored. There are also reported issues with the valve timing or valve chains which can be a costly affair...
I looked at a '04 Avant S4 a while back, looks exactly like my 1.8T but obviously all the S trim. Wasn't badly priced and had 100k on the clock but the fuel bill, servicing bill and potential repair costs should something big happen put me off. I would really love one but sensibility ruled my thoughts...

Only the RS4 we got here in B7 shape would suffer from carbon build up as it was one of the first generation direct injection FSI motors. I am not sure what would be considered excessive, your Polo TDi will have some carbon build up and possibly sludge as it is direct injection...VW 'John Deere' TDI wrote:Don't they suffer with excessive carbon build up, or was that only the RS4?
