VW does not refine oil. So any brand which meets the spec as per manual would be fine, exact brand would be down to personal preference.

The last time I bought a top up from the agents, they gave me 5W-30 507 00 standard.

thanks guys - I've seen threads on some other forums where there was a debate between 505.01 vs 507 hence need clarity.

Then I have also been told that higher mileage vehicles such as mine would need a 'thicker oil' to compensate for engine wear....

a little confused here...

The manual as well as the supplements do not even list the engine code of my Bakkie I.e. CNE... I can only assume because this was because of the crossover period from 120kw to 132kw somewhere in 2012. My Bakkie is registered august 2012 but seems to have the old user manual.

505.01 for cars without a dpf
507 for cars with a dpf.
Look under the car if there is a dpf and use the correct oil after finding that out.
You can still use 507 if it does not have a dpf but can't use 505.01 if it has a dpf.
There is no need to use a differnt oil due to age but if you insist then use a 5-40

Seriously? That is bizarre, I thought it would have provided the spec and grade of oil to be used.

For ease I've listed the Common 507 oils we can find on our local shelves:

Engen PETRONAS Syntium 5000 AV
Shell Ultra ECT/PRO AV-L
Total Activa/Quartz INEO
Castrol Edge
LIQUI MOLY Top Tec 4200

Can personally vouch for the 5w 30 viscosity - but as panic said if you insist then 5w 40 (I wouldn't)

TIP: get an oil that is easily available should you need to topup and as far as possible do not mix brands

It only lists the spec i.e 505.01 vs 507 , but the reason for my confusion was that my engine code isn't listed in the manual.

Just being extra cautious as it is a diesel with high mileage so do not want to break something by using incorrect oil. I called Alpine VW and the guy at parts dept could only tell me that it is a 5w-30 but not whether it was 507 (i'm assuming it is 507).

Thanks for this Ice king... makes sense regarding top ups - I do know that at the last service the oil was purchased from VW so would have most likely been the 5w-30. I haven't needed to top up or anything since then so will probably stick with the 5w-30. Il have a look at the locals spares shops though and will choose the easiest available 507/5w-30 oil like you mentioned...

If you haven't needed to top up between services, then your engine is probably in good shape, regardless of mileage. I would just go with the spec, as earlier posters advised, and not fart around with other viscosities. (BTW, I've noticed before that VW manuals only list engines by specs (size, power, torque), but not by engine code.)

Panic did mention to me that VW source their oils from Castrol, and that other manufacturers, at least Shell, tend to have more aggressive detergent additive packages. So you may find that oil consumption increases initially when changing to another brand, at least Shell.
