Need tips on replacing DMF clutch on AHF

Post by VAG Fan »

I'd like to replace the DMF clutch on my Mk4 TDI, before it fails completely. It's a pity, really, as the clutch still works fine, no slipping, no shudder, but the DMF is making a progressively worse clacking noise when shutting the engine down, and one can clearly see at the bell housing that there is lots of play between the two masses. It appears that the springs are failing, and the mass swings too far, hitting some end-stop.

I'm looking for advice as follows (based in Pta-East):
1) I want to stick with a DMF, not convert to SMF. I have a budget. Any suggestions on where to buy a kit - preferably Sachs?
2) I have neither a lift, nor the experience (time), nor the muscles (helper) to do this job myself. Any suggestions on a good installer in the Pta-East area?

Have a chat to Shorty at Goldwagen in Wekker Street, Moreletta Park. He has always given me good advice and service.

Regarding replacement, I have used German Auto in Elardus Park before to do work on the S4. No issues, although their labour is not the cheapest, but less that the agents. Perhaps check them out before deciding.

@bill.bum: thanks for the heads-up; for now, I think I'll start my search closer to home.

@ Anton:
I know Shorty. I live in Moreleta Park, and he's on my list of contacts anyway, as I buy most of my parts there, ever since they opened.
For a moment I thought German Auto is Karl von Seydlitz; I know Karl's workshop in Elardus Park, but it's not the same address as shown on German Auto's webpage. I'll actually ask both.

Paid around R5500 to R5800 for a complete kit for those last year. There is really is not much difference in quality between luk and sachs and theynare about all you get anyway so take the cheapest one.

German Auto's head mechanic is a chap named Clive. His bedside manners are, shall we say, abrupt at best, but he is very good.
Fortunately, the office ladies and Clive's partner Quinton, are friendly and helpful.
For what its worth, their car wash is one of the best I have encountered.

Stephan: dankie, neem kennis.
