Oil change.
Hey members all the best for 2018!
Just have a quick question, iv got a 1.9tdi Polo 74kw and its due for a oil change.
What would be the best oil to use? The mileage is just on 150k km.
Also how good is the Liqui Moly range on oils?

Re: Oil change.
Check your user manual for the recommended oil and stick to it, it is probably VW 505 or 507 specification oil. I prefer using Shell and have for many years but I hear the Liqui Moly range is pretty decent.

Re: Oil change.
Im pretty sure its the 505, i also heard that the Liqui range is good but then again rather use what is tried and tested.
Thanks so much for the reply.

Re: Oil change.
Liqui moly are very good oils. They are more expensive and not available at a forecourt so perhaps buy some extra incase you have to top up.

true when its comes to the ability of the oil, drain interval (longer life)4ePikanini wrote:505.01 or 506.01 or 507.00

507.00 is better than 506.01

but i would rather stick to a 505 01 5w40 oil, i feel it would offer better cam follower wear protection which is what pd requires most
afaik the 506 and 7s only come in 30 and is pd approved but i still feel that 40 viscosity will help slow the wear

Re: Oil change.
Please explain by what scientific principle does a oil that has a higher viscocity provide better shear protection on a cam?Jueshen wrote:true when its comes to the ability of the oil, drain interval (longer life)4ePikanini wrote:505.01 or 506.01 or 507.00

So looking at JUST viscocity which is what you are saying.

Re: Oil change.
Hi,
my response was not a scientific one hence i stated "i feel" ...
wouldnt a 40 oil will stay thicker at higher temps than a 30, that would offer better protection to the lobe / roller, camshaft that wears on the PD motors..
i could be wrong hence this is a forum where we discuss, and have also read other forums and owners advice:
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=367856
at the end of the day we can read it all, take advice and gather information to best make a decision we a re comfortable with

Re: Oil change.
Interesting read, Based just on viscosity I found that the the 40 rating was always better over the 30 even when compared to its own brand havoline 40 Vs havoline 30 which both have stable shear rates.
But that's just viscosity when shear rating is thrown in there is more to compare to. , I read something similar about shear ratings when oil is just new and how changing oil too early ain't good. Anyway can you give me a brand of fully syn 507.00 oil that is available locally and I will compare it to the fully syn havoline 505.01 oil that I use I will also compare it to the shell helix hx7 AV 505.01 that everyone uses which is not fully syn. I did a similar comparison with hfrr wear ratings with the diesel brands looking at technical datasheets

Re: Oil change.
507 only required for cars with dpf.
http://www.myturbodiesel.com/wiki/engin ... di-diesel/
go and check the technical bulletin attached there - has shell ultra as an approved oil.

thanks, i see in that link under "camshaft wear issues" he also suggests a 40 weight over a 30 to better protect camshafts..

Re: Oil change.
HX7 AV is 505.01 specification.
507.00 is a better oil and supersedes all previous diesel specifications for VW/Audi diesel engines*
*except non-DPF R5/V10 Pumpe Duse engines due to the metallurgy of the big end bearings that require the additives present in 505.01 and 506.01 and not in 507.00.
