Common problem on 2.0 TDI?

Post by freezaburn »

Hi guys,

Has anyone experienced an oil pump / balancing (hex) shaft failures on the '05-08 2.0TDI (BLB) engines?
I came across an '06 Audi A4 2.0 TDI that is up for sale - it has 155K on the clock.

Seller says there is nothing wrong with the car - which is good on the one hand, but the car is on the bad-side of the 'danger zone' in terms of mileage for the above problem to be known to make its appearance....

The InterWebz suggests a pump replacement with a 1.8 Passat pump or to do a pump delete with one of the kits off e-bay.
Googling a bit, this job is a 12 hour PITA to say the least. I am mechanically capable of this job, but quite frankly do not know whether it is worth the fuss? Any opinions would be appreciated.

All Current Rides:
-2009 Audi A4 (B8) 2.0T FSI Avant (155kw)
-2005 Audi A4 (B7) 2.0T FSI Avant (147kw)
-2005 Toyota Hilux D/C 2.7VVTi (118kw)
-1995 BMW E36 316i
-1994 Golf MK3 GTI 2.0 Exec (85kw)
-1986 Citi Golf Sport 1.6 (63kw)

Sold mine 266Km it was still running well , no oil pump issues , did the decat at 200km and off course cambelt every 100km .
The oil pump issue is more about the pickup getting blokked , I took off sump and checked that - no major issues , the car has a fantastic onboard computer and it will warn you when either oil is low or oil pressure is low , I miss that car I had the Avant and it could get 4.2 L per 100km and really solid safe car

Thanks Supervly

Was yours the BLB engine?
Do you know what psi the TDI is supposed to produce for oil pressure at idle and running?

oil pump failure is a pretty common issue on them yes.
I know of the 1.8t pump as a solution for the BWA engines and we do it often but I have never seen it done on the diesel (so really not sure if it is possible and I'm not saying it can't)
SO really unless it is dirt cheap and can find another motor to make it worth while let caveat empor rule.

Hi yes it was BLB engine and sorry I do not have any idea of oil pressure , but as I said the onboard computer will tell you exactly when its running low

Yes, the engine is running. Drove the car but it has some serious turbo lag...(In 4th gear at 100km/h, putting my foot flat takes just under two seconds before the turbo kicks in)

Also, you have to practically rev to 2K on pull off or the engine stalls. Since the car has had a remap done at TT and has a new turbo, I do suspect that it may very well be the injectors. At the price of injectors, plus the possible oil pump issue, I don't think it is worth it.
