TDI idle consumption

Post by billionairebum »

Hello Gents

Wanted to get your opinion on something. My cars idle consumption is a bit all over the place. My previous 1.9 tdi idled solidly all day at 0.5 l/h and my current 1.9 tdi idle ranges from 0.6 - 0.8. Where would I start in figuring out the problem?

Specs:

Car: 2007 1.9 TDI Sportline
Software: Dimsport
Turbo: New only done 4000km + IC + piping
MAF: Cleaned
Cambelt: Replaced 40 000km ago.
Service: Full service done 2 days ago.
VCDS: Shows no errors. Injectors are also within spec and ( I THINK, not 100% sure ) timing is in spec 0.6
Location: JHB
Consumption: 0.6L/h in the morning, after 10 minutes its 0.7 and coming home around 4-6pm its 0.8L/h.

Regards

Put the obc on something else. It won't bother you then . You worrying about 200ml/ hour?
It can be simply differing aircon load.

I would struggle to explain how ridiculous it is to worry about something like that on a guessed consumption number.

To the OP:

I don't think it's shameful or OCD at all. I check idle consumption regularly (Note: after having switched off all electrical loads - lights, fan, aircon etc.). On a warm engine, mine is mostly 0.5 l/h, but sometimes it just goes to 0.6. I also make sure that the radiator fan isn't running, as this can increase it by 0.1 or 0.2. But, with no loads, it's almost always 0.5, and I would definitely start to wonder if it went to 0.7 or 0.8.

To my knowledge, the data comes from one and the same MAF, and if this is really so inaccurate and inconsistent, then I wonder how the ECU manages to inject the right amount of fuel consistently. But I'd gladly stand corrected...

If nothing else, you'll be glad to know you've found a kindred spirit. Let's go stand in the shame corner together.

Maybe it is timing related related. Try adjusting it slightly and see if it makes a difference.

Alternator and aircon load will easily make those differences. So unles you kill all consumers and then watch it for an hour I promise you there is nothing broken. No need to fiddle or repair anything. Again you a worried about a variation of less than a can of coldrink over an hour. Just stepping on the clutch will change engine load. The fans coming on and cooling the motor puts more load on the alternator thus changing engine load.

dont worry about this as panic said.
i noticed on mine it varies when changing brand of diesel then after a few 100ks it settles.
sometime 0.2, 0.1, 0.5 all depends how i come to a stop, when changing diesel brand goes to 1 sometimes
total consumption when filling at pump is what matters most to me
