Re: Buying a high mileage BiTdi Amarok
That mileage is way too high. What is it being priced for? These cars are known to give engine issues. Have you looked at a toyota?

Re: Buying a high mileage BiTdi Amarok
That's stupid high mileage considering the age of the vehicle. Wouldn't touch it unless you're getting it for next to nothing.
Do you have a full list of everything that's been done? Service intervals adhered to, what parts have been replaced etc? I'd imagine that the service history isn't exclusively through a VW dealership as the owner would likely have gone somewhere else after the plan expired due to mileage.
Maybe take the car for one of those AA or Dekra 100(?) point check and get an objective view of the condition.

Re: Buying a high mileage BiTdi Amarok
Just buy a toyota!!! You dont buy high milage bakkies if not Japanese. 200000km on a hilux is breaking it in and wouldn't have had drive train replacments.

No but seriously VW is great, but Toyota doesnt break as easily and there is a reason its the best sellers in many segments.Reegz wrote:Said no one on VWClub Forum. Ever!mueneni12 wrote: Have you looked at a toyota?

Re: Buying a high mileage BiTdi Amarok
Thanks for the feedback guys. Price is 185k. I get the Toyota reliability and reputational argument however they are pricey and the drive isn't very nice, way too bouncy for my liking.
Are there any specific components that I should pay special attention to?

I'm guessing panic mechanic is still busy with Dub Run. He'd have some good insight into what you need to be wary of.
Perhaps wait for the guys to get back behind their PC's from the weekends fun and share their views before you make a move.

Lol I guess congrats are in order then. Post some pics.
If the bakkie has been taken care of then you should be fine. It's just that at that mileage things naturally start coming up for replacement.
Hold on for the experienced folks to comment on what you need to be on the lookout for.

Re: Buying a high mileage BiTdi Amarok
Thanks dude. Does seem it was taken care of but hey, I understand it's a mechanical thing, so there will always be some risk.
Drives very well and the interior is surprisingly clean for its age. Either this guy really kept it well or the amarok is put together very nicely!

Re: Buying a high mileage BiTdi Amarok
Along with the cambelt change try find out if it has the revised cambelt cover.
Being a 2012 it should have the revised one already though, but just to be safe.
Go over to the 4x4 community forum. There are plenty high mileage amaroks there, with very few issues.
Mechanical sympathy is your friend. Stick to the correct grade oil and service schedules and you'll be golden.

With this sort of distance for its age it probably did a lot of open road travel which is far better for any engine than, traffic stop start travelling.

Re: Buying a high mileage BiTdi Amarok
That is very high for a 2012 model.
For what it's worth, few months ago my Dad fetched R240k or so for his 2011 120kw biturbo 4motion DC 6MT, had 156xxxKM but FSH and no gearbox\clutch issues with extended warranty etc. And it was used as a daily worker with lots of open road & off road etc. New owner reported it is still going strong at the moment.
Service history and mechanical sympathy will go a long way with these

Re: Buying a high mileage BiTdi Amarok
I love the way some people say they are known for engine problems, some people like to make unfounded statements without any actual factual knowledge. Anyway, the amaroks have proven to be just as reliable as the jap cars, many guys with over 200k and 300k mileage already. Cam belt is the biggest thing to check, snapped belt will cause big repair bills so take care of that.
