Sasol 10ppm vs Shell V Power 50ppm
Hi guys,
Just need a bit of advice. I currently drive a 2002 Mk4 Golf 1.9 TDi.
The car has Wulfchiptegnik software and decat. Since I bought the car I have only used Sasol 10ppm and she has been running fine - decent amount of power and torque. On Sunday I was too lazy to go the Sasol so I filled up with Shell V Power 50ppm. My butt dyno tells me that my car is pulling much stronger and the motor is running much quieter and does not sound like a Isuzu KB anymore.
Are they huge downsides of continuing with the use of the Shell 50ppm? The car currently gets serviced every 15k kms - if I continue with the Shell 50ppm, should I reduce this to 10k kms? Any input will be appreciated.

Yes, let see what is suggested. I might continue with the 50ppm and reduce the service interval to 10k km.Dietermk4 wrote: interesting topic..... on my mk4 tdi i used to use 50ppm....then switched to 10ppm for cleanliness.... lets wait for the boffens to help us

Re: Sasol 10ppm vs Shell V Power 50ppm
50ppm = Higher sulphur rating = more lubrication = less noise = more carbon build up and possible oil sludge.
On the older models 50ppm should be fine, the MK4 was invented before 50ppm so it can actually run on 500ppm truck/farm diesel.
People add 2stroke oil to their bakkies if they use 50ppm where it was designed for 500ppm and each and every one of them that i have met swears by it.
In my honest opinion, stick with 50ppm and regular service intervals as indicated in your user manual.

50ppm and 15k or 1 year services
If you can get 10ppm easily then go for it or else stick with the above.

Mine was absolutely gutless on 10ppm, especially before getting into boost. I went back to 50ppm and it was a different car.

Ive only ever used the Shell V Power 50ppm diesel and serviced the car as per the book
Every now and then I use either NF 3 in 1 cleaner on half a tank or the NF Diesel Boost on a full tank
Off topic though but my Astra pulls a lot harder when using the NF 3 in 1 on half a tank, anyone else experienced this?

Re: Sasol 10ppm vs Shell V Power 50ppm
I'm experiencing the same. She pulls very strong with the V Power and the fuel economy is down as well - managed to get it down 3.5l/100km on the highway yesterday. Also, she doesn't sound like a diesel anymore, much quieter.Fastandfurious wrote:Mine was absolutely gutless on 10ppm, especially before getting into boost. Re: Sasol 10ppm vs Shell V Power 50ppm
My 3.brokeTDI also sounded smoother on 50ppm, only ever had half tank of 500ppm in as it was all we could find at that stage.
Could not really feel a big power difference.
I will never buy diesel from Shell Honeydew (Eagle canyon side) ever again, mate of mine had to replace 3 injectors, who only used them as we worked around the corner in Laser Park and he travelled from PTA each day, discovered water in the tank and injectors.

Re: Sasol 10ppm vs Shell V Power 50ppm
I run 500ppm shell in my Touareg R5 Pumpe Duse engine and it is by far the best performing and most economical diesel out there of all the ones I tried. ULS Sasol makes it sound like a bag of bolts. Hate it!

Re: Sasol 10ppm vs Shell V Power 50ppm
Daily driving I more often then not use 50ppm but if racing or having some friendly runs I use 500ppm for sure, power increase is very noticeable, I service my car around the 10 000km mark or less, so not worried about contaminating oil

The manual suggest if using 50ppm service at 15 000 intervals and if using 500ppm serving every 10 000

Re: Sasol 10ppm vs Shell V Power 50ppm
any engine runs happily on 500ppm.
But....
The oil gets contaminated more quickly. 10'000km oil changes are recommended
The DPF gets clogged more easily
The exhaust sensors get clogged more easily and fail prematurely
If you have a freeflow with no silly sensors and filters in your exhaust and you change your oil every 10'000km then use 500ppm if you can find it. Better power and better mileage awaits you.

Re: Sasol 10ppm vs Shell V Power 50ppm
For me I normally stick to 50ppm. I tried all 3 variants (from various suppliers) and found I liked the 50ppm the best. I like the combination of the sulphur, lubrication properties, engine noise, consumption, etc, the best from the 50ppm. 500ppm gets me worried when it comes to cleanliness, and the 10ppm worries me in terms of lubrication.
However, the most important thing for me, is filling up at a garage that has a high turn over of diesel. This is so I know the fuel hasn't been stored for too long, or hasn't been fiddled with to make it cheaper (like the cheap ass truck stops in the farm lands), so as to prevent as much contamination in the fuel as possible, and keep my injectors clean.

I still need to try some of the diesel NF products. Maybe even the injector cleaner from Liqui Moly as well.BlackoutVXD wrote:Ive only ever used the Shell V Power 50ppm diesel and serviced the car as per the book

Diesel also helps to lube the injectors.
Personally I like to stick with 50ppm.

Re: Sasol 10ppm vs Shell V Power 50ppm
I have a MK4 Golf TDI and the car was running fine with a reconditioned turbo on 50ppm. In the morning when it is cold and I start my car it sound like the valves in the turbo doesn't open ( sticky valves ) and when the engine is warm the problem was gone. The last time I used 10ppm from Sasol and drove 300km abd the sticky valves got worse. No the valves doesnt open at all and there is a wind noise under the hood as the revs pick up.
Could this be of the 10ppm?
I took off the turbo and couldn't press the actuator down, its sticky as hell.
I bought a Garrett GT2052V from a Nissan Patrol that is in excellent condition, currently busy to build a custom manifold and downpipe and if everything is fitted I'm gonna take the new turbo off and send it to Gaby at Fastec for a service and install it again.
Got FRC software on, will take it back for a remap.
Will you recommend then Shell V power 50ppm??

use 250ml JASO FC two stroke oil per tank of diesel. It keeps carbon deposits at bay and prevents VGT vanes from sticking.
It's even been observed to free sticky vanes.
