D.I.Y SHORT SHIFTER ON MK1(56k suck my selector whahahaha)

Post by Solo786 »

first of all many thanks to powerflowPE for the necessary info/pics on how to do a short shift for a mk1..thanks mate 8)

Ok, so after i saw whats the procedure to follow, i dashed out and went and procured a spare selector, cost 50 bux.. i then had a panel beater friend bend it in the necessary places(i didnt trust myself with an acetylene torch) so heres the selector after its shortened:

Short Shift Selector
Image

it looked a bit shabby after being heated and bent so i gave it a coat of the evil black stuff

Image

Out with the old one
Image

Pretty straight forward job - all you need is a 13 spanner and a large flat screwdriver, the only hassle u may encounter is when removing the little plastic linkage that fits on the metal ball of the selector - it is rather tight, use some force - but dont break it =)

Old vs New: Major reduction in height
Image

Image

This is another essential requirment for doing this job..
Image

Finally after a little R&R i installed the new one and went for a drive

When installing the new selector - donot forget to apply a little grease on that metal ball and inside the plastic linkage.

In with the new
Image

Ok so the test drive..

all you guys do beware the change is VERY significant, from have a distance of 5miles between 1st and 2nd it now feels like 5cm!! the reduction in the throw is simply amazing - its almost like the shift on an S2000 now.

As PowerflowPE warned - the shifts are a little tighter than before, but VERY much faster..

Note when engaging reverse it goes in normal, but when exiting reverse the lever may feel stuck.. dont panic..just push down on it a little more and it will come out of reverse.

Hope this helps 8)
cheers

now do this to smooth things up again:

Image

clamp a piece of sold bar (approx 800g) to the selector rod  works lekker and is a DIY imitation of the std mk3 item!

I'm not sure what sort of extra stresses your short shift mod puts on things but here's an alternative/comon way:

:D :D :D lol bruce - but it needs some work to fit a mk1 though

i need to lengthen it a bit on either side - so i gave it to the engineers and they going to drill the weight on either side and tap threads into it and they gonna make up 2 rods with thread on one end each - this way i'll manage to adjust it for perfect fit

yeah, that might be a lil bit of a mission bro, i reckon im going to take i pip to the right diameter and put it over the shift rod, block the one side and poor lead into the pipe so it gets the right treatment...my pops casts his own bullet heads as he reloads bullets and has all the right melting pots  if that doesnt work im goingto have to make another plan

Is there anybody in jhb who can do this mod. Wouldn't mind paying someone to source the parts and do the fittment. DIY's ain't my strong point.

the pics I posted are all of mk1 stuff, the mk3 stuff is only interchangeable with the mk2 linkages!

Lemme get this straight...

You need:
1 X STD selector
1 X Warm vlam
And you bend it in 2 places, the you got short shift in a MK1?

I'm doing this TOMORROW

The only hassle i've had - honestly.. is my factory vw gearlock no longer works..

because of the change in shift length reverse gear no longer lines up with the hook of the gear lock..

Thats the only thing.. else im enjoying it!

ok..yeah i guess you guys up in GP need all the security measures as possible since mk1's are targets..dang!

whatever the case - you can always change back to the normal selector! it takes less than 15mins to swop.

just clamp a damn weight (approx 700g of bar) onto the front selector rod, it works really well, I've been running mine for ages with no problems and it requires no messing about (look at the top rod), the bottom rod is a custom adjustable piece.

If you have a show car then maybe make another plan but for a driven car it makes a big difference and costs nothing in time or money!

This is mk1 stuff not mk3 stuff:

all my posts are the easy way of doing things...follow that and you have a 10 min installation jobbie.. provided you get your spare selector and have it bent as necessary.

Harley's post is a different method of doing the short shift..

just wait til sunday - i'll show you how its done when we meet up at TTC :P
