Advice needed please.....need a daily

Postby zane.mk1 » Mon Jan 22, 2018 11:17 am

Hi Gents,

Been a while, changed jobs a couple of times and been busier and busier, hence no time to troll on this toilet so much anymore.

I am looking to buy my wife a nice daily. She only wants power steering and AC.

The idea is to get something economical and comfortable and not paying an arm and leg.

The cars we identified:

VW Up - 1st choice at the moment.
Audi A1 - would love to get her this but the prices are a out of our budget.
VW Polo Vivo - Least likely to buy but looking at some anyway.

My budget is around R120k max

I am looking at the base models and 5 dr.

My concerns and which I need your opinions are:

Resale value
Purchase price vs how much car you get vs difference in price between these 3 cars (if it makes sense)
I havent seen the up and the A1 upclose, and will be having a look to gauge quality and features etc.

What are your opinions on these three cars and which would be the most beneficial i.t.o my budget and thoughts.

Any other recomendations on a cheap daily would be also appreciated.

tx.

The A1 is in a different bracket altogether unless you looking at really old one. You will even battle to find recent ups anywhere near your budget. My guess is that you are looking at 4 year old plus cars.

Up is better built than the vivo

check out the Kia Picanto/Fiat 500 at that price range... should get a low mileage decent spec one for around that price... A1's hold their value surprisingly well so difficult to find a decent on in that price range, but that being said, I agree with the previous point - it is in a different bracket altogether - in terms of build, comfort etc...

Been up close with a couple up!s. They look epic and are very spacious, even the 5dr derivative. Also a customer of mine mentioned he fills up for around R450 and gets around 600klm on a tank

Hi gents,

Thanks for the replies.

I realise the A1 is in a different class, so I scratched that.

The Vivo seems to have a really "cheap" feel and build.

I am really keen on checking out the Up. Need a 5 door though.

I came across a couple of 2014-2015 models for under R120k with low mileage.

Depending how finances look, I would like to ideally go for a 5 dr with pano roof.

The wife hates the Kia and fiat, she quite likes the Chev Spark though.

But dont like the look and feel of the Spark.

Plus a Up with some nice wheels and the pano roof looks lovely.

Will see how it plays out.

Doubt you will get a 5 Dr Up for 120k... (they are just too new)

My Wife drives one (3d) and it a fantastic car, no other small car holds a candle to it!

Great build, ride, surprising cruising ability, refined, it really ticks a lot of boxes. Economy wise - 17-18 km/l mixed and up to 25km/l open road. Down sides... those doors are big! reaching for the safety belt a pain untill you figure to rather grab from the bottom of the B pillar and the stock sound is shite!

What about the Renault Clio.
Little higher than your budget, but they are nice cars. Think the Dynamique comes standard with steering controls, bluetooth audio / phone prep, navigation, elec windows, cruise control etc.
The 0.9 3 cylinder Turbo is a little dead under 2500rpm, but they go fairly well.

We got lucky when the SO hunted for a small daily, and stumbled across a UP Club Edition, with all the extras ticked.
What a nice little car, I love the little thing. Well built, extremely light on fuel, and suprisingly nippy.
Would recommend one over and over again!

Just remember that the back doors of the 5 door up doesn't have wind down windows. Its pop out back windows.

For what its worth, I had a couple of 3 door cars previously with pop out windows at the back. Neither had aircon, but having those windows flipped open whilst driving, a nice draft was created from the front of the car to the back. Plus it wasn't overtly noisy either, unlike a sunroof. With the Up having aircon, the need to open said windows will probably not be required very often.

I suppose if claustrophobia is a factor, this could be problem.

My grip with this isn't the type of window, but rather the application. I personnaly think that pop out windows on a 3 door are amazing But on a 5 door its just weird.

Fair point. Even my 21 year old Citigolf has wind down rear windows...

I suppose if you're the driver or front passenger, it probably won't matter that much. :) Methinks that with the car originating from colder climates, the need for proper wind down windows was not that great...

But I agree, it seems a bit strange.

Look at other brands like Suzuki Swift, Hyundai i20, maybe Renault Clio's

UP's aren't really that popular so resale value won't be any decent in 5 years

Not keen on moving out of the VW stable.

Not too worried about the rear window setup.

Just need 5 door to accomodate kids in and out on their daily commute to school and back.

Going to have a look at a couple of Ups to see what's Up!

If you want

Resale
Affordability
Low cost easy to diy maintenance
Good fuel consumption

Vivo gets my vote. Even easier than major service on a citi golf

I hired an UP loved the build, fuel economy and crusie. Its far ahead on cruise than most small cars. Feels like a much bigger car.

A1 is way more expensive to compare in this "budget" range. Its a better car than the others but costs more and more maintenance if off plan.

I do agree, not sure on resale value though.

I am liking the Up because it looks a bit different.

I dont like the look of the vivo.

No one wants to hear this, but if you want better than Golf 6 quality for half the price, look up some 1.4 Guiliettas.

Brilliant, well put together interior, solid exterior, safe, not a highjack risk, awesome looks, kicks 1.4 tsi butt, need I say more? Take your wife and go test drive one. You'll fall in love.

Considering you going for such a late model car you should also consider the private market, you will save a few thousands by going this route if you bargain well. You can easily do "private-to-private" finance if you need finance.

Also do your own homework on retail values, use Wheel Index to get a free car valuation report https://www.wheelindex.co.za/car-valuation-tool
