WLAN Purpose in Discover Pro Units?

Post by JohnathanH »

Hi Everyone,

Has anyone had a chance to play around with their WLAN feature in the Discover Pro 8.0" unit? Perhaps other head units also have this built in.
Researching online I found it is to be used with Carnet features but my model does not have Carnet, nor does any ZA models as far as I am concerned.
So why then still put WLAN in the car?
Because it can connect to my phone when mobile hotspot is enabled (client). Or I can connect to it's SSID (host). But other than that I don't know what the function is. Maybe future wireless carplay is also a reason but who knows?

Thanks.

I asked this question on a MkVII Golf forum a while back, I'll try find the post but it is basically useless in SA as we don't get a whole host of VW features here.

Thanks Neuk. Same here when searching Google and other forums - not much out there for our models... silly why they would then still enable it in our FW. But like I said, lets hope it will cater for future Wireless CarPlay at least. Maybe that was the idea for leaving it...

We'll have to wait and see, I use most of the standard features available in my car like simple Bluetooth as a lot of the advanced features like Apple Carplay are a long way off from being properly usable.

I actually played with and paired my phone with bluetooth the first time yesterday (as my USB port was occupied with the new 2017/2018 map updates being installed for the Nav) and I must say I am quite impressed with it (bluetooth streaming). I can navigate and browse my iphone music library in the same fashion as on my actual iphone/carplay which was quite cool. I actually want to try vw voice commands still while in this menu...

I find the Bluetooth connection far more useful than CarConnect, whether it is browsing music or using the phone. And the issue I have with the cluster display when using CarConnect is another annoyance...
