Shallow mount, free-air subs

Post by BB-GP »

Does anyone have some first hand experience with these?

Im happy with the speakers and tweeters that the Jetta came with, just want to add a little bit of bass without losing space and maintain an OEMish look.

I initially considered an active sub mounted under the seat, but these dont seem to get decent reviews (the Kicker hideaway reviews seemed 'okay')

Im now looking at free-air subs, specifically the comp series from Kicker (8/10 inch), anyone running these? or something even better?
Right now im willing to trade some bass for a more simpler/cleaner setup without boxes etc. Quality amps/subs, no cheapies

The sub/amp will be mounted on the rear deck

Maybe something similar like in the audi a4. They come with a free air sub as standard mounted to the parcel shelf

Hi

Option 1:
Shallow Mount, Free air sub , uses the boot as a box , good for lows but thump wont be hard.certain frequencies it wont be able to respond efficiently to.

Option 2:
Active Sub under the seat , not very effective but will make a difference , More thump than lows.

Option 3:
Slimline Sub , Best all around and a winner in my opinion however does require a box but needs minimal space and can easily look factory with a custom box made on either side of the boot. Will give you good lows and hard thumps.

Thanks @ICE King

I'm between Option 1 and 3.
I knew Option 3 would be the best option in terms of sound quality.

Just trying to have a slight improvement over stock sound.

For option 3, would the sound not be lost in the boot since its a sedan? Hence why i was looking at a parcel shelf mounted setup...

Correct regarding option 3 and a sedan however its plays hard enough to both hear and feel it. Will play just as hard with the boot open as opposed to the Free Air Sub.

Slight modification to the parcel shelf will help the sound escape the boot.

I'd suggest one of those DD loaded subs..alot of punch for such a tiny sub and it is plug and play.It doesn't require alot of power either.

A vent/port in the parcel shelf will help with getting the bass into the cabin.
