Project :Polo Vivo - Performance Upgrades

Postby Solo786 » Wed Sep 30, 2015 3:34 pm

As some of you may know I've commented about the potential that the 1.6 16v platform has and I was looking into development for some bolt on mods as well as a tune.

Initially I was of the opinion that the original plastic inlet manifold was restrictive and lacked volume as it was sans a stereotypical plenum chamber. After testing it turns out the OEM manifold is actually quite reasonable in terms of flow (170 cfm) and maintaining air speed and bottom end torques. A log type manifold with a plenum flows marginally better at peak (15 CFM more) but low end torque is sacrificed to quite a degree and the motor loses it driveability at low rpms.

The head itself in stock form flows 195 CFM, which alludes to what sort of hp these motors can push out :)

After further tests it was quite apparent that the factory airbox was the greatest restriction... Enter Stealth Tuned, I approached Kumarin from Stealth who gladly came to my assistance after showing him the potential these motors had and we set about testing with the Factory Intake vs a prototype we're developing. The results which I will post below were totally unexpected, and Im sure I will hear the internet mechanics chime their usual, however a gain is a gain..

Perspective:
Head flows - 195 CFM
Head + Stock Inlet Mani - 170 CFM +-
Head + Stock Inlet + Stock Airbox - 124 CFM

Below is a graph that was done back to back, Stock vs Prototype - with a maximum of 10 mins in between runs to swap parts.

Image

I will keep updating this thread as we develop the hardware and gains for this platform. Once the intake is finalized and tested, I will be moving on to developing a tuned length 4-2-1 Exhaust Manifold and Exhaust System to see what further gains can be had before tuning the ecu..

My goal in the end is to achieve as close as 110kw,190+ nm on this - before looking at reground cams, headwork or even a turbo kit.

Comments are welcome.

Thanks

I had dynoed one evening when it was cold and it made 84kw stock.
I settled on the 81kw reading as it was in the day and much more realistic. These motors are sensitive to carbon deposits as well as fuel quality and air temp.

I neglected to mention that with our prototype intake coupled to the factory inlet mani the flow is around 160 CFM. Theoretically this puts us in the 110kw goal ballpark.

All that's left now is the tune and I'm trying to find some engine data for the valve timing so that I can apply the relevant formula for the revised branch manifold.

For interest sake , have you considered the 1.4 platform , would be interesting to see intake results on that motor too.

The intake will fit the 1.4 and you will see a gain, how much exactly we will have to determine once we're done with development and test on a 1.4 motor.

with a little more duration /lift i think its possible to get 130kw - I may just do it on my own vivo, but offering it out i dont see many willing to pay for it

130kw from this 1.6 is kind of impossible, unless you spend mega bucks
It will need to make 190nm @6500rpm to get to 130kw.

Which is 1.25nm/liter less than the world record (120nm per litre Ferrari 458 Italia)
And that Ferrari engine has quite a bit more tech than a 1.6 VW enigne.

OR. it's going to need to rev all the way to 8000rpm.
With no Vtec or VVT it will be undriveable at anything below 3000rpm.
