Reegz' Daily - 2012 Golf 6 GTi, Edition 35 **Ceramic Pro Rim Detail**

Postby Reegz » Wed May 10, 2017 1:13 pm

Turns out I don't have a rides thread for my Polo's replacement. Imagine that.

I picked this up in October 2013 with a shade under 10 000km on the clock. Car was in great condition and was going at a fair price, considering.

In terms of mods it's stock standard. My extended warranty expired last month which basically means it's weapons free to tinker around.

But I have school fees to think about and that always curbs my enthusiasm. However, a man can dream.

Having had this car for almost three years now I can honestly say that VW just do it right when it comes to the Golf. It's comfortable for Jhb's grinding daily traffic and an absolute beast for those moments when I find myself with a little room on the way home.

Cruising on the highway is effortless as one would expect.

This jammy gobbles up tar on long drives. It's almost comical how easy it is to fly past trucks and other vehicles while still maintaining a decent fuel economy.

With just one kid the car was alright even though getting the pram in along with other luggage was a struggle (hence the Jetta). But of course once they're old enough to make a mess they're not allowed in the Golf!!

Having been born and (mostly) raised in PE owning a GTi is kind of completion of a life goal in some respects. This car has lived up to the lore that GTi held and continues to hold in my life.

Nice ride man. Few people understand the true appeal of a GTi. Its one of the few proper everyday cars that can fly with the best of them. Jeremy Clarkson really hit the nail on the head when he said "it doesn't matter what you drive, every garage needs a GTi".
What a girl friend said when I took her for a first drive "OMG I think I just came in my pants"

Every time I see one of these, especially in white... I think to myself.. "Yep, I'd give up the s3 for one of those!"

Take care of her man, she's a beaut!

Re: Reegz' Daily - 2012 Golf 6 GTi, Edition 35 **Fokken Battery**

Postby Reegz » Mon May 22, 2017 4:34 pm

Dammit!

Car struggled to fire up this morning. The radio and DRL started up just fine but there wasn't enough juice to turn the starter.

The Jetta (which is parked right next to the Golf) started up first time so I'm guessing it can't really be due to the cold because both cars would have suffered in that case. So am I right to say that it's the battery??

It could be the battery, winter shows up batteries on their way out as they cannot store as much energy in colder temperatures.

Is there any reason why the battery cannot be changed at any place other than a VW dealership?

VW mentioned that they need to run diagnostics etc and I recall reading elsewhere that the computer needs to reset as well when the new battery is fitted.

Reason I ask is because VW say they need the car for the day (to fit it in between other jobs) whereas Battery Centre can do it on the spot. VW Edenvale works out cheaper (parts and labour) than BC but I cannot afford to be without the car for another day.

So, what's a man to do?

Stephan can explain better but the car has to be reset in terms of the battery charging ability which is far more advance than in previous generation VAG cars. There was a thread discussing it somewhere on the forum...

Yes but anybody can do it with a vagcom as long as the battery comes with the right code.
Ask vw for the price of their econo range batteries, fit it yourself and get it sorted by vcds afterwards.

Thanks guys. Decided to rather have it done at VW. The quoted price from them (parts + labour) was cheaper than the price I got from Battery Centre. More importantly though there's the peace of mind that the system is updated correctly.

Caveat is that I have to wait until the weekend to get it sorted. So until then it's Viva la Uber!

New battery is in!

Ended up getting the "Econo" range battery from LS Edenvale. Supplied and installed it worked out cheaper than Battery Centre. So it was a no-brainer really considering that the guys performed some diagnostics and updated the software, which I don't think BC would have done.

How's that price difference between the economy and stock battery. I was shocked.

Insane!

Two econo batteries fitted work out cheaper than one OEM install. Madness! I'm not losing any sleep over not going the OEM route.

Damn straight!

I phoned around for prices on the OEM battery. Would have set me back R3500 for just the battery.

That is a sizable chunk of money that would have had to come from my bumper respray fund.
