My Mk5 GTI - Sold :(

Postby G-spot » Tue Dec 09, 2014 10:27 pm

So some may know, after a loooong wait, I recently took ownership of Chicken Licken's old GTI. CL sold the car and the previous owner had the car for a total of 13 months, And done roughly 4000km.

The car is in a exceptional condition all round considering its almost 8 years old

The full rides thread can be found here : viewtopic.php?f=11&t=40723

The car has been meticulously looked after, with only the OEM or the best parts used.

So since I had the car there has been a few issues I had to attend to as well as changes I made

The first was a few of the LED's were on their way out, So replaced them with new ElectromannSA LED's

Second was the performance, The car is seriously lacking go, At first I thought it was a boost leak, Which we found was where the silicone hose clamps over the FMIC, The cooler has oval ends, So was leaking out the long end. We took off all the piping, cleaned everything and put it back.

Image

At the same time Martin (Scatman) removed the Neuspeed air filter extension (relocates the filter to behind the fog light) Which helps massively for air temps, However there is no opening for direct air to flow to the filter, Usually DSG grills would sort that out but with the FMIC piping the DSG grills, Well the ducting for it, doesn't fit. That and my fear of hydrolock, moving the filter back up was a logical decision .

While busy under the car I also installed a GFB DV+ along with the RevH OEM DV.

So after everything was put together, I was rather disappointed as the car is still under performing. After speaking to a few guys, including CL, It was concluded that the boost is being held back due to agro timing, Which is meant for high octane fuel. With this being my daily, Running OB in every tank is unrealistic, So sw will have to change. The current revo 2+ map has been on the car for a while, so im sure just a revised map will work wonders for the car.

With that done, I arranged with Morne (g60) to do a Oil change service and give the car a good look over. Oil was changed as well as plugs (NGK PFR7G, Laser Platinum)

He did pick up a fueling issue, which has made me massively paranoid, But from what I've read, The lpfp should run around 6/7 bar, Mine runs around 3.7/4 bar, and dropping to as low as 1.1/1.3 when hoofing it  . so this could either be a blocked filter, or a failing fuel pump, Either way, both on the to do list to change. VW wants R4200 for the pump and GW delarey can only supply OE parts, which suits me, And luckily its 2/3s of VW's price. They on back order so waiting for stock then back to Morne to fit. He also pointed out that the no1 and n04 coils have quite a bit of rust on them, So even though they are hassle free at the moment, I should maybe look at replacing them.

Ive also got myself a set of VW Roof bars (thanks Rodga), Which I already pulled apart and painted. I tried to get as close to the matt united grey as possible, And very pleased with the outcome.

Image
Image

So onto what my plans are... (for now, Im sure it will change as I go)

Happening in the coming week

Maintenance wise
-Replacing Fuel filter
-Replacing LPFP (should the above not sort the fuel pressure problem)
-R8 Coil packs
-New cam follower (just to be safe)

Mods wise

Revo - I'm really keen to get the Revo file off the car so that I can load my own file, Unfortunately revo protects the ECU. so cant load over it. I've arranged with Ian to have it flashed back to stock, however I would like to compare revo's 2+ to our map. Ian said he will happily load a revised file, and then remove it for me once dyno'd. so as soon as the fueling sorted ill be heading to Ian for that.
SW - Very keen to get my custom Wulfchiptegnik map loaded.
Turbo - Im working on getting a hybrid k03 turbo  If that does not pan out ill look into a k04
Plumbing - based on the above, I'll be changing the Discharge and throttle pipes with a neuspeed ones (pending k03/4) But if I'm going K04, I'll get Nico at RC performance to do full custom piping.
TPMS - I want to install a OEM tire pressure monitoring system, Got the idea from Morne as done on his GTI. Very cool mod and OEM.
Boost gauge - I'll be removing the Defi boost gauge and Osir vent pod and re-installing the original air vent, I monitor boost on the FIS+, So no need for the gauge
Radio - I was planning on replacing the MDF2 with a RNS/RCD510, But having to spend money on a new fuel pump put that on hold. I'm leaning towards the RCD instead of the RNS, Purely because I have no use for the nav, and paying 3x more for a feature I dont really use is stupid imo.
PCV Blockoff - So Somewhere along the line the ECS PCV blockoff Sean installed was removed, and no one seems to know anything....But Morne said he will assist with blocking it off, If he cant, i'll just get a blockoff kit from Vagcafe

Cosmetics
R32 rear - Here im in 2 minds, I really like the R32 rear bumper, But The more I look into it the more i doubt my choice. So will see what happens over time.
Tail Lights - At first I wasnt keen on the .:R20 LED tails, But they have grown on me, I still don't like them on the day, But they look awesome at night. If I come across a set of OEM R32 tails i'll swop in a hear beat.
Yellow - The yellow is not working for me, So I'll be changing it back to the OEM red
Front bumper - So the front bumper is basically perfect Looks wise, But ive found that from all the taking off, painting and putting back on, the clips and guides have work and broken, So the bumper doesnt line up as well as it should. So between speaking to Morne and Aldo, As soon as this bumper is due for a respray, i'll be getting a new OEM bumper and having Aldo spray and fit it for me.

The guys that know CL, know he didn't take shortcuts with this car, I plan on keeping things that way as much as possible.
eventually I would like to revert back to the below look, Biggest change would be changing the wheels to United Gray

Image

And a few of the latest pics:

That's pretty much it for now. I'm extremely happy with the car in general.

Congrats dude, wishing you many happy miles.

This was/ still is a favorite MKV of mine, and hoping you don't change too much. LOL.

As for the LPFP, I had mine fail as well and the car didn't hold boost nor did it have any go.

I have replaced mine with an OEM one from GW for the mean while until I can make up a bracket that will house aftermarket pumps in the stock basket.

Looks like you have some really good plans for the car, will be watching this thread closely.

A while after Dewald bought my 5 he also cried and cried about the LPFP, told him to replace the fuel filter but he persisted in getting a new lpfp- then before fitting that new lpfp he replaced the fuel filter and the car was 100s again! VW hardly ever replace fuel filters on these cars as they're "LONG LIFE" items.... you'll be surprised at the amount of black yoghurt sludge boktos that builds up in there starving the hpfp of 95.

Definitely get an R32 rear, just swipe you can wipe your tears away later!

So I have heard as well, That's why Ill replace the filter and see, If it is the pump, I might as well replace it while we are busy. if not, I'll return it for credit.

Lol, There is more important thing to to sort out and spend my money on at the moment, but will see, Maybe end next year.

The yellow is a CL thing, just like the pink I had on my polo, It worked and looked nice, But it works for some, And not for others. The Yellow doesn't look bad, But its not me

The United Grey is awesome colour, it looks darker with dark accents like the wheels, And lighter with light accents, I preferred the darker look of the car
