Mk1 Racecar - Race report 21st October 2016

Postby AlexTDi » Mon Nov 24, 2014 12:10 pm

After dreaming about racing competitively for years on end, I thought there is no better time then now!

So these past couple of months I've done some research, met a few experienced drivers and discussed it with our very knowledgeable forum following.

I decided that the Super Hatch series (http://www.superhatch.co.za/) will be the ideal starting place for me, I then started searching for an already seasoned race car and this is what I bought

It is a VW Challenge B Class car, Specs are as follows:

Quite a neat shaven bay
2.0 8v
Flowed FI head
288 cam
Diktator management
Custom Branch and Exhaust
Bigger radiator
4 row oil cooler
State of the art oil catch tank

Roll cage connected to strut towers
Poly bushes
CTI Anti-roll bar
Bilstein Coilovers

Then all the other tricks and secrets to make it a track car, Lots of stuff I never knew before hence buying an already seasoned car.

There is a lot of stuff I still need to do as regulations for the series are different to the VW challenge and I don't even own a race suit  but I will soon get there and start racing next year :driving:

I am a complete rookie/noob/zero experience car enthusiast so this journey I'm taking will be experienced by both the readers and myself.
My goal is to hopefully help other rookies when they are looking for online guidance as there really isn't anything available and dreams quickly end due to the lack of information available.

I managed to find some time to pull the stickers off, I still need to give the car a good wash to get the sticker residue off, Anyone have suggestions on stuff that will remove the glue easily without damaging paint?

Congrats and all the best. I'm sure lots of fun will be head. I have a big jealous.

Try some Goo Gone on the sticker residue. You can pick it up for about R60 from your local Builders Warehouse. You could also try a tar remover.

Good luck and all the best, be safe out there.
No idea where you are going to find such a small race suite.

How much is the race costs? Excluding tires, fuel, spare engine/gearbox and other parts.

How hard would it be to roadworthy this car when you hang up the racing gloves one day?

No race suit shouldn't be an issue, Even if I have to wear a kids race suit I'll do it  Previous owner is the same height as me so even the seat is in the perfect position.

Race costs are just over 1k but more realistically a race weekend will cost between 3-5k as long as you don't crash or break anything major.

I'll type out a budget "start-up" post once I've acquired all my stuff.
