Project Kirschwasser

Postby EX-DOHCTOR » Fri Feb 15, 2013 9:26 pm

So, after 10 years of lusting over this particular two door I finally bought it, lots of work to do, but it'll be worth it in the end.

This is when I went to go an look at it.

Part whoring started in earnest:

Not much progress has happened yet due to the Christmas period and us being away. I'm gonna start with a major service to the engine and get the mechanicals sorted. Also need to get the electrics looked at. I want to drive her around before the big tear down.

My plan is to tear it down to shell, send that away for sand/media blasting and then have the rear valence fixed/replaced, get oldschool fenders on her and then have her primed and resprayed in Tornado Red (MK5 GTi). Once the painted shell is back I'll start rebuilding her.

Basically a nut and bolt rebuild. Everything is being replaced with new stuff. That how I do rebuilds  I'd also like to do a full dynamat install before the cabin is put back in. That's just to start with.

My wallet has already taken a knock with all the bit's I've bought thus far, and we still have to finish furnishing the new house. I've allocated 2 years and about R60 000 to the restoration. Assuming that'll be enough

I thank you.

I plan to go back to old school with this car. Even as far as getting the small tail light valence back in. I might have to import that from the UK though.
It may be easier just to replace the current valence with a citi one so that the big tail lights fit properly.

Yeah, previous owner bought the white rims from Super Stu, they came off his race car. I plan to use then rims after they've been refurbished. Thinking of making them white again. Hehe, It's an interesting contrast red and white.

I am getting ready to do a major major service on the car soon. Gonna do a cambelt change, engine, radiator and brake system flush, change the water pump, replace the wheel bearings, brakes and shocks all round. Once the mechanicals are sorted I'll give the wiring some attention. I plan to strip out all the 30 year old wiring and replace all of it. There are several enhancements I plan to make as the project gets going.

I'd like to be able to drive the car around to get quotations before I strip her down to shell and start the full restoration. There is still a lot of parts I need to get before she cna set tyre to public road, and a helluva lot more before I can tear her down and rebuild her.

I am thinking of doing the car in Tornado red, which should come out something like this:

Image

Image

Another option is something like this:

Image
Image
Image

I would need to replace the rear valence to the small tail light type before I can go for this look. Do it right or GF.A!

My brother can get me a set of P-Slot rims over in the UK, so this is also an option:

Does anyone know where I can get dynamat and how much I would need to completely sound proof this car?

When the car comes back from paint I'll have an empty shell to work with, so I can do the firewall, floor, boot, sides and roof. That should require quiet a bit I would think.

Nice one. Will be following this build.

Good that you have an idea of what you want as well as estimated budget. That way you can be realistic about things and do it properly.

What mods are you planning with the motor, and interior?

Are you getting the small bumpers, small taillights, etc?

For now I am gonna leave the 1800 Carb motor. This motor is pretty strong for a carb. Used to run circles around my 2E Golf.

I am still thinking about whether or not I will be going FI or not. I've had a 2L Golf 1 before, running a stock 8V 2E Longblock on PRS 4 Management. I am thinking of something similar so a 2L ADY on MP9 for example. Simple, weekend cruiser FTW! Then I am thinking, because this is going to be a weekend toy, maybe a 1.8T

I've not really factored that into the budget though. I've stuck 60k aside for the tear down and rebuild of the car in it's current setup, obviously with repairs and enhancements as I go along. Motor upgrade would be extra.

Interior is pretty bare at the moment. Door cards are shot, sunvisors are gone, rear door cards are still with the previous owner (I've not gone to fetch them yet).
If I can find me a set of original GT seats I'd do those in leather. Dash is missing all of it's buttons and knobs. I want to fit a complete Golf Life dash in there and new clocks too.

But I first have to strip everything out, sort the rust on the floor pan and then sound proof the cabin, so interior will only get proper attention when the car is back from sandblasting and paint.

As for the small tail lights, if I can find a good condition rear valence and a decent panelbeater to fit it, I'd go that route. I want to go old school on the car and remove all that Citi stuff.
