Belix's '10 RS GTI 6 - from Durban to Pretoria...

Postby Belix » Thu May 06, 2010 4:02 am

My reflex silver GTi thread:

Done thus far:
- RNS510
- 9W3 Bluetooth 9WZ A2DP compatible Bluetooth
- OEM R LED rear lights
- OEM R kit side skirts (bugger me, what a price!)
- OEM muddies (since removed, car too low!!)
- OEM 2012+ version LED headlights
- VCDS: Rain closing, fog cornering, hazards on harsh braking, alarm blip, change RNS scheme, dial staging, TPMS activated
- Under-seat drawers
- S3 jack pads
- Rubber mats
- Door marker lighting to replace the reflectors
- H&R VW Driver Springs and Koni Yellows
- ED 35 front bumper
- Retrofit RVC (reverse view camera)
- Retrofit MDI module under arm rest
- Retrofit PDC Optical Park
- Retrofit TPMS (ABS based)
- S3 metal intercooler
- Dodgey chain tensioner changed for latest version
- Colour FIS / MFD

Want to do:
- 19s (which freaking ones!!) gonna stick with 18s
- Folding mirrors with puddle lights
- Side Sill covers

Original question:
Has anyone fitted non standard 18" mags to GTi6? Looking to replace them with some VW listed alternatives (although price will probably kill any hope of this). VWSA has hardly any info, but one site seems to suggest Wheel arch extensions 1K0 071 680 and suspension travel limiter 000 071 501 are needed (as well as a rear axle camber change)

Surely one 18" wheel can replace another? Or are the standard mags a special offset?

you need to compare the offsets and width to ensure optimum fitment

I wouldnt listen to VW.

try the wheels first. If there's a massive problem then do that other stuff. But 99% of the time from the same manufacturer, yes, 18inch is 18inch.

Checked it out, VW says the 18" stardard VWs need to have that stuff done for any 18 inchers, so GTI should be ok out of the factory.
Anyway, swapped the standard rims for a set of Visions, so will find out soon enough...trial by fire!

is it just me or do the wheels look smaller than 18" :bang: :bang:
18" Vision 5x112 8J

Weird, was speaking to onyx and he mentioned the same thing...

Perhaps time for a set of 19" Omanyts...and a drop (come on HUGE Christman bonus! PLEASE?)

Must look into clearing issues, and some sites say it 8J, other 8.5J.

Know a place I can see all the OEM VW 19" mags?
VW "Velos" and "Spa"s also look good, but don't seem to be available in 19"

The shopped ones are somewhat cheaper, about R5K. still not great, but better than R8K!!

helios are pretty neat but seem to be a bit too popular.

Changed rear lights to LED from the R. Details here viewtopic.php?f=94&t=104667&p=1007685#p1007685

Re: GTI 6 - muddies fitted (not so sure on look)

Postby Belix » Mon Dec 20, 2010 5:48 pm

Got round to fitting the muddies I bought.
Installation mostly simple, but one screw on each was a real PITA, unless perhaps you are a skinny orangotan with an extra elbow joint...VW has a sence of humour at least...

Flaps...

The two main (easy screws). Thought I could get away with not taking fornt wheels off...wrong...

Rear flaps had one less screw...

But to reach the lower mounting point, I have to stick your arm over the exhaust at the back and into the tiny cavity between the plastic and the plate, then still go a bit further...and then hold a size ten spanner there too...

Front one easier, but the lower mounting joint is right where the jack goes, and since the car seems to have few jacking points, I preferred to use the OEM one, in the indicated position. Only way to do it was to fit the tyre back on, take car off jack, then fiddle under the car to get the the spanner onto the nut, and try and find a torx screwdriver small enough to fit under the car when not jacked up...

Finished products...

If you're not to sure of the look...neither am I! Sometimes I think it looks great, other times, not...
