On Sunday 11 January the VW club of South Africa held it’s first event of the year 2009. It was to be a social event where all the members (and non-members alike) were to meet up for a breakfast run to Hartebeespoort Dam.
The first members arrived at the New Road Caltex garage on the N1 North early morning. As the time passed, more and more avid ‘dubbers pulled in, keen to meet up with their old friends of the VW Club after a blessed festive season.
As always, the conversations focussed upon cars, the passed festive season, new modifications, plans for the new year and general catching up.

As soon as most of the attendees were present, Nic Catt, the VWCSA chairman welcomed all who was present and gave a general overview of the route to be followed and some safety tips.
The turnout at was great, with a total of 37 cars, mainly ‘dubs, lining up to leave for Harties. Heading north on the N1, the convoy turned onto the N14 Krugersdorp highway, which is a nice quiet 2 lane highway. The sight of 37 cars with their main lights switched on all driving in convoy is epic. Goosebump material indeed. The convoy took the Lanseria off-ramp and went right, over the highway. The road to follow was a narrow, scenic, single lane one, which promised loads of twists and turns, uphills and downhills, with the lavish green surrounding bush on either side of the road, blessed with the summer rain which us Gauteng inhabitants are all too used to.. |

The convoy run went down with no hassles, and soon we pulled into the Pancake Restaurant at Hartebeespoort. The owner and waiters alike were quite surprised when the request was for seating arrangements for 70 odd people.
They soon organized tables and chairs for all, and everyone ordered their respective breakfasts of choice. The food preparation took quite a while, but everyone were not too stressed, as this meant the conversations turned out to be longer and more fun, and more catching up got underway.
After everyone had their breakfasts, all went their merry own way and returned to their homes, with another, successful VWCSA event behind them.
2009 at the VWCSA events side of things will turn out to be a “RockThousand and 9” |

On the 1st of February 2009 VWCSA hosted the first official event of the year.
Registration kicked off at 8:30, by which time the usual suspects had already arrived.
The event started at 9am, having run just under 48 cars by 10:30 and no cars standing in the cue, comments of an early day had started flying around, but as soon as we open our mouths the enevitable happens.
The day went very well, meeting new people, catching up with the regulars, getting sunburnt and having some awesome wors rolls supplied by team Mobstyle was just part of the excitement, but the real entertainment arrived later in the day with some mind blowing (or maybe that was just the ear drums) power from some seriously strong cars later in the day, Stongest car overall on the day pushing 554hp of power and 680nm of torque.
Overall the day was a good one and enjoyed by many.
Special thanks goes out the Shane and the team from K.A.R for making the day possible. |

The first racing and track event of 2009 was held on 21 February at Swartkopz and it was a fun filled day with 3 main events.
The first event was the Endurance Karting wich hosted 8 teams of 4 drivers each, dashing round the track in 15 min intervals for a duration of two and a half hours. The race was on and after the first few laps, teams had already started to identify rivals and each lap was a race against a rival driver, trying to improve your lap time and bringing your team to number one.
In the end it didn't come down to how good you were on the track but also how good you were in the pits, switching drivers, communication in the team and keeping your kart in one peace as you overtake the next opponent. |

The karting was followed by the Car Gymkarting and as everybody who were at the Jamboree 2008 would know, this is the most fun a karting track can supply.
With its tight corners and bends this is realy not only a test of your cars capabilties but also those of each and every driver. This is the one place where suspension plays a bigger role than kilowats and where it is more man than machine.
The usual suspects were ready to roll with Jojo surprising everyone with his semi's and killer times and Craig with his mint MK1 GTi showed the citi-boys how it was done old school style. |
|
VW Hatfield Bryanston was kind and brave enough to give us two of their 1.4 Citi's for the day to host the first ever VW Club of SA Citi Challange.
In the style of "Star in a reasonable priced Car" competators had the opertunity to show what they were made of on an equal playing field. All using the same track with the same car there were no advantages and it was a showdown of note mano e mano.
Yet again Craig Pillay were the winner breaking Allen Mee's time with a few split seconds. |

| All and all a great day and definately one to remember for everyone that was there. If you want to join in the track fun, dont miss the 2009 Jamboree |
